FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Jurors are deliberating for the second day to determine the fate of former Broward Teachers Union president Pat Santeramo.
Santeramo is facing nine charges that include theft, money laundering and illegal campaign contributions.
His trial lasted a little more than two weeks, and things wrapped up Tuesday with closing arguments.
Defense attorneys used their time to argue that there's no paper trail proving that the 68-year-old stole any cash.
Instead, they claim that the office fell behind on proper recordkeeping.
But prosecutors insist that Santeramo inflated invoices on work done at the union, and schemed with a construction company owner to pocket about $300,000 of dues paid by Broward County teachers.
He's also accused of reimbursing political campaign donations out of union coffers.
Santeramo faces up to life in prison if he is convicted.
