Broward Sheriff's Office takes 1 person into custody

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Two Broward Sheriff's Office deputies were hospitalized after they were injured while trying to stop a burglar in Pompano Beach on Thursday morning.

According to police, Mia Nistico returned home from walking her dog and found a strange car the driveway of her home at 2201 Bay Drive. She called police at 9:10 a.m. to report a burglary.

BSO deputies Mike Gardner and George Wesolowski responded to the scene. When deputies tried to detain the suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Joshua Boyce, he resisted and a struggle ensued.

Boyce then got in his car and used it to "violently assault the deputies," according to BSO. Deputies fired and Boyce was struck in the leg.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue transported Deputy Gardner to Broward Health North with non-life-threatening injuries.

Boyce, drove off and later hit a patrol car, injuring a second deputy, identified as Jeff Hurt. Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said he was driving the wrong way at one point, then crashed at Hillsboro Boulevard and A1A, where BSO took him into custody.

The dramatic moment was captured on video by a tourist visiting from New York.

"I was a little nervous when I saw all the cops draw guns and stuff," said Julie Albrecht, who saw the crash.

The two deputies were taken to Broward Health North with non life-threatening injuries.

"We're optimistic that they have a quick recovery," said Israel.

Boyce was also taken to Broward Health North after being injured in the crash.

It was the second police pursuit in Broward County in as many day. A police pursuit Wednesday ended in a fatal crash at U.S. 27 and Griffin Road.

"It's tough to deal with," said Israel. "There's not a sheriff or a police chief in the nation that wants to see their men or women have to chase subjects."
