Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said results from DNA tests of the blood found at the scene linked Smith to a January 2013 burglary of a house under construction.

Deputies were called to the burglary and found that someone used a hammer to break a window and enter the home, although nothing appeared to have been taken.

Blood found at the scene was sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for analysis.

In June 2013, a warrant was issued for Smith's arrest, but he was in a state prison serving time for a burglary in Pinellas County. Upon his release, he was returned to Monroe County to face the burglary charge.
