Broward rescue workers free dog; owners refuse treatment for bites

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A terrier that  got its left hind leg caught in an escalator guard at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on New Year's Eve was freed by firefighters.

The 2 to 3-year-old dog was flying back to New York with its family when it walked up an escalator and its paw got caught, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said.

The dog's owners attempted to free the dog, but were both bitten by the dog, which was in distress, Jachles said.

Deputies also attempted to free the dog, but didn't have the proper tools to free the pooch.

Finally, firefighters were able to free the animal. The dog was not seriously hurt.

The dog's owners refused medical treatment for their bites.
