Dog taken by owner to be euthanized is saved

Miami-Dade Animal Services looking for family to adopt Tommy

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 2-year-old hound mix is getting a second chance at life despite his fate a few days ago at Miami-Dade County Animal Services.

A representative with Animal Services said the dog was brought in by its owner on Aug 1 to be euthanized after it had been attacked by another animal.

Chief Veterinarian Maria Serrano said the dog, which they named Tommy, developed a serious infection.

"His leg was severely infected and he was becoming septic, which means he was going to die from the infection," said Serrano.

After examining the dog, which was still cheerful and friendly despite its injuries, Serrano said she knew it could and had to be saved. Shelter employees would take it upon themselves to do so.

"His leg needed to be amputated in order to save him," she said.

Animal Services decided to go for it and surgeons quickly got to work on what Serrano said was a risky surgery.

"He is such a loving dog. He is happy. He is housebroken. He deserves a second chance," she said.

Tommy's front left leg was amputated and his wounds have since healed unbelievably well, according to Serrano.

Local 10 News asked why her team felt the need to go so far out of their way for this one dog.

"We try to save every dog that has the spirit to live and has that potential to be adopted. He had it. He can live happily with three legs. He is happy with three legs," she said.

Now volunteers are trying to find Tommy a home.

Doctors said his stitches will be coming out soon and the only care he'll need after that is a warm bed and a loving family.
