Miami-Dade police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said Donald Strange was involved in a verbal dispute with his 46-year-old wife when the altercation turned physical and Strange shot his wife in the chest.

Strange, 59, got away in a 2010 maroon Honda Accord, Zabaleta said.

The shooting was witnessed by the couple's 11- and 13-year-old children, but they were not injured, Zabaleta said. The 11-year-old boy called 911 after his father left the scene, Zabaleta said.

Strange's wife was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where she was listed in critical condition.
