Dozens of skimmers found at South Florida gas stations

103 credit card skimmers discovered in statewide sweep

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – More than 100 credit card skimmers were found at gas stations throughout Florida during a three-month investigation by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Commissioner Adam Putnam announced Tuesday that his department uncovered 103 skimmers used for identity theft at more than 7,500 gas stations that were inspected.

South Florida had the highest number of skimmers found with 16 found in Miami-Dade County alone. Eleven skimmers were found in Palm Beach County, nine in Broward County and two in Monroe County.

To protect yourself, officials advise paying cash inside the store, check to make sure the gas pump dispenser is closed and use a pump closest to the store as thieves generally target pumps farther away.

Those who believe that a gas pump has been tampered with are asked to contact the gas station manager, local law enforcement or the department's consumer protection and information hotline at 1-800-HELP-FLA.
