Driver charged with killing pedestrian

Carlos Padron charged with DUI, DUI manslaughter

MIAMI – Police arrest a 37-year-old driver who investigators say was drunk when he hit and killed a pedestrian in Miami late Thursday.

Police charged Carlos Padron with DUI and DUI manslaughter.

According to an arrest affidavit, Padron was making a right turn onto Northwest 7th Avenue at 20th Street when he hit a man crossing the avenue. His car then crashed into a concrete pole.

"He said he was on the Palmetto Expressway, which was clear to us he was completely incoherent," said Miami police spokeswoman Kenia Reyes.

The pedestrian was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he died. His name wasn't immediately released.

Arriving officers found a bottle of Skol Vodka inside Padron's car, police said.

"The Def (Padron) exhibited blood shot eyes and had an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath," wrote the arresting officer.

Padron failed a field sobriety test, police said. He provided two breathalyzer samples at the police station and blew a 0.335 and 0.337. Florida's legal limit is 0.08.

A friend of Padron told police he had a heart attack about four months ago and battled alcoholism, according to the report.

Padron was physically unable to make an appearance in bond court Friday. He's expected to make his first appearance on Saturday.
