Driver in fatal Hialeah hit-and-run arrested

Police: Driver fled after striking car that killed woman in back seat

HIALEAH, Fla. ā€“ Police say they have arrested a driver who was involved in a hit-and-run that killed a 66-year-old woman.

The incident happened at 6:20 p.m. Saturday at West Second Avenue and 20th Street in Hialeah.

The 25-year-old driver of a white Nissan Sentra ran a stop sign and hit a Ford Excursion with six people inside. Amelia Caridad Diaz, who was a passenger inside of the Excursion, was ejected and killed, police said.

The driver of the Nissan walked away from the scene. Police said witnesses followed him and informed Hialeah police he was at a food market a few blocks away.

Police were able to track down the driver. Police said he did resist arrest and was shot by a stun gun by police.

Five other family members who were inside of the Excursion suffered minor injuries.
