FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A driver is dead after a car was struck by a Tri-Rail train in Fort Lauderdale.
Police said the train was traveling about 35 mph when it collided with a car on the tracks early Friday morning at Cypress Creek Road.
The man who was driving the car was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the train has an exterior camera.
"Hopefully that footage has a great image of what happened," Detective Deanna Greenlaw said.
Passengers on the train told Local 10 News they saw the car try to beat the train across the tracks.
"The bars were down. The train was still in motion," passenger Che Charlot said. "We were slowing down to pull into the station here at Cypress Creek and (suddenly we saw) the car flipping over."
About 100 passengers were on board at the time, many of them on their way to work or school. They waited on the train for about an hour after the crash.
"We didn't feel anything, didn't feel any kind of bump or anything like that," passenger Alexandria Day said.
No one on board was injured.
North and southbound Tri-Rail service between the Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach stations was shut down for several hours during the police investigation. Shuttle buses were being used to connect passengers traveling in either direction.
A small crowd gathered around as the body of the driver was removed from the car.
"One bad decision can end it for you," passenger Shawn Rogowski said.
The name of the driver hasn't been released.
