Drunken driver caused I-95 wrong-way wreck that killed 5, report says

Autopsy report shows Alexandra Lefler had blood-alcohol level of .189 percent

MIAMI – A Miami-Dade County medical examiner's report shows that a 23-year-old San Francisco woman was drunk when she drove the wrong way on Interstate 95 last year, killing herself and four others.

The report, obtained Wednesday by Local 10 News, shows that Alexandra Lefler had a blood-alcohol content more than double Florida's legal limit Dec. 30 when she drove south in the northbound lanes of I-95 for about a dozen miles before colliding with three other vehicles between the Miami Gardens Drive and Ives Dairy Road exits.

According to the report, Lefler had a blood-alcohol level of .189 percent. The state legal limit is .08 percent.

Lefler died in the crash, as did four family members who had gathered for the holidays.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Miguel Gil, 47, and his mother, Gisela Egui Hernandez, 71, had just picked up his sister, Dr. Gisela Gil-Egui, and brother-in-law, Jose Martin Labrado, 47, at Miami International Airport when they were struck by Lefler.

Another victim, Katherine Warsch, 27, suffered minor injuries after she crashed into a median while narrowly avoiding being hit by Lefler.

Joao Carabajal, 58, whose car was sideswiped by Lefler's truck, also suffered minor injuries.

The autopsy report said Lefler died of blunt-force injuries to her head and neck.
