Dwyane Wade: My cousin was killed

NBA star mourns loss of cousin to gun violence in Chicago

CHICAGO – Dwyane Wade's cousin died in the Chicago Parkway Gardens neighborhood on Friday afternoon.

Nykea Aldridge was a mother, who worked as a medical office assistant. Four kids lost their mom for no reason, the NBA champion said on Twitter hours after the fatal shooting.

"Another act of senseless gun violence," Wade said.

Aldridge was walking from the Dulles School of Excellence with one of her children about 3:30 p.m. when two men started firing their weapons, police said.

Aldridge's child, who was in a stroller, wasn't shot.  She was shot in the head and arm.

Aldridge was "just going to register her kids in school and bullets that fly around and have no name decided to find a way to her head," Wade's mom Pastor Jolinda Wade said during a press conference, as she held her sobbing sister Diann Aldridge.

Doctors at Stroger Hospital pronounced Aldridge dead about 4:15 p.m. Three daughters and a son survive her.

One of the gunmen was in police custody on Friday night. Detectives were looking for another.
