Kerveney Arthelus arrested in fatal Pompano Beach shooting

Man shot dead under tree near home Sunday morning

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Broward Sheriff's Office deputies have arrested a man accused of killing another man under a tree near his Pompano Beach home Sunday morning.

Kerveney Arthelus, 28, was arrested later Sunday after witnesses and tipsters helped identify him as the shooter.

Deputies were called to a shooting at some apartment buildings on Northwest Ninth Street shortly after 8:30 p.m. When deputies arrived, they found a man dead outside.

Witnesses said the suspect had been banging on the apartment doors with a gun in his hand. They heard gunshots outside and then saw the victim on the ground.

Residents described the victim as a nice man who often stood outside.

"It might be that he's just an innocent victim here who was standing by in the wrong place at the wrong time," BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella told Local 10 News. "We don't know what happened between the victim and the suspect right before the shooting."

Arthelus faces a charge of first-degree murder.

The identity of the man who was killed hasn't been released because his relatives live outside the country and haven't been notified of his death.
