HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Salon owners and employees all over Broward County have been on the alert for an elderly man trying to pass off fake $100 bills.
Local 10 News has learned he's targeted salons in Weston, Hollywood, Dania Beach and Sunrise.
"He looks like somebody's grandfather," said Susan Degugas, who works at Hollywood Five Star Salon in Hollywood.
"He was kind of nice and funny with a big smile," said Jaki Cohen, who owns Glamour Hair in Dania Beach.
But some have figured out the hard way that it's all an act.
Victims said he walks into a salon and asks to buy hair products or a gift certificate for his wife. He then pays with a fake $100 dollar bill.
The products cost between $25 and $40 and his goal is to get real cash back as change.
The elderly man has hit three salons along Stirling Road.
At Hollywood Five Star and Glamour Hair, alert employees didn't buy it.
"I held it up and there was no hologram and I knew that it was fake," said Degugas.
"The minute that I hold it, it felt weird -- thicker, different," added Cohen.
Employees at the two salons said the elderly man told the clerks that he would go to his car to get a credit card but fled instead.
Shai Salon on Stirling Road and Salon Sophisto in Sunrise weren't as lucky last month.
"He got us when we were real busy, so we didn't have a chance to check it," said Salon Sophisto manager Gyzettet Perez.
None of the salons Local 10 News talked to have called police, so there is no open police investigation.
Salons have been finding out about this by word of mouth and on social media. Surveillance video at one salon shows the man getting into what appears to be a silver four-door car.
Several victims said the man is Hispanic.
