Miami Gardens incumbent Oliver Gilbert III re-elected to mayoral seat

Gilbert wins 66 percent of vote

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. ā€“ Mayor Oliver Gilbert III is set to maintain his position in Miami Gardens after winning a special election Tuesday night.Ā 

The Florida Supreme Court ordered the special election after mayoral candidate James Wright filed a lawsuit against the city when his qualifying check was returned to his bank, thus disqualifying him from the election, the Miami Herald reported.

The court ordered a new election in September.Ā 

Gilbert, who has served on the Miami Gardens council since 2008, won 66 percent of the vote in the special election.

Wright got 21 percent of the vote in the election, Ulysses "Buck" Harvard earned 7.9 percent of the vote and Clara W. Johnson won 4.6 percent.Ā
