MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A giant plume of smoke near Okeechobee Road and the Florida Turnpike got a lot of attention Saturday from passerby and those on social media.
The Florida Forest Service said the fire began as in a controlled bur. The blaze jumped its containment line and spread through the White Rocks Quarries near the turnpike and U.S. 27.
The fire spread after flames started by a certified burner got out of control, officials said.
Forestry officials and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel worked throughout the afternoon to contain the flames.
There haven't been any reports of structures or homes being threatened by the fire, or injuries.
