Explosion at marijuana grow house in Boca Raton prompts evacuation

Nobody inside home when deputies arrive

BOCA RATON, Fla. – A west Boca Raton neighborhood was evacuated Tuesday morning after an explosion at what deputies are calling a marijuana grow house.

Residents on Southwest 62nd Avenue said they woke up to the sound of the explosion about 5 a.m.

The front window of the home at 22195 SW 62nd Ave. was blown out.

Nobody was inside the home when Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived.

"My neighbor behind me said the guy actually jumped the fence," neighbor Melody Handy told Local 10.

Surveillance video from a neighboring home showed a man and woman walking from the house to a car.

A dog found inside the home was not injured.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Deputy Eric Davis said the owner of the home claimed it was being rented by someone else.

Neighbors said the renters were a young couple who mostly kept to themselves.D

Deputies said the couple appeared to be extracting oil from marijuana.
