Police said the man was killed sometime Monday night or Tuesday morning after opening a gate to let a vehicle out of the fairgrounds.

Police believe that the employee got too close to the gate and it fell on him.

"We are saddened by the death of our longtime employee from an apparent workplace accident. We are cooperating with police, who are conducting a thorough investigation," the Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition Center said in a statement.

The victim's identity has not been released.
