Fire forces families out of apartments

Resident says she heard explosion before fire

TAMARAC, Fla. – Several families were forced to evacuate an apartment complex after it caught fire early Tuesday morning.

Police and fire crews arrived at 4511 Treehouse Lane to find flames shooting out of the roof of the apartment.

"I'm hurt right now," Judith Mytil said through tears. "I'm in shock. I mean, the last thing I remember was decorating my Christmas tree and going to bed and waking up to flames."

Mytil suffered burns to her foot while running out of her apartment with her 9-year-old son.

Four apartments were damaged.

"I saw the rolling black smoke and it just took me by surprise," said Tcherlie Macenat.

"It's charred. They had heavy smoke damage," said Van Schoen with Tamarac Fire Rescue.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
