Family asks for help finding hit-and-run driver who killed man in Homestead

Joseph Williams struck by car while crossing street on way to library

DORAL, Fla. – It's been one week since Joseph Williams was killed by a hit-and-run driver after stepping off a bus in Homestead.

The 63-year-old man had just gotten off a bus last Friday and was crossing Southwest 280th Street near 147th Avenue when he was struck by a car that kept going.

"He was going to the library -- the public library," sister Evelyn Guzman said during a news conference Friday.

Williams' sister and niece traveled from Atlanta to South Florida to ask for help in finding the person responsible for taking his life.

"We don't know who hit him (or) why they left him in the street to die as road kill," Guzman said.

Miami-Dade police said the driver was behind the wheel of a 2006 to 2011 black Chevrolet Impala. Williams was taken to a hospital and died three days later.

"Other people have to know something about what happened, even if the car had to get fixed, something," niece Candice Batton said. "Somebody knows something. … Anything helps."

Police have been searching area auto body shops because the car that struck Williams is believed to have front-end damage.
