MIAMI – The family of a man who was gunned down after leaving a nightclub in Wynwood over the weekend is asking for the public's help in identifying the gunman.
Miami police said Thomas Quass was fatally shot early Saturday morning on Northwest 26th Street near North Miami Avenue.
Police said Quass, 41, and his girlfriend left a Wynwood nightclub and were walking to his car about 1:15 a.m. when a man approached them and had a confrontation with Quass. That man shot Quass and got away in a waiting gray 2013-2015 Hyundai Veloster.
Quass was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Quass worked as a swim instructor at Edge Aquatics in Fort Lauderdale. His mother said the violence needs to stop.
"Until people realize, we should be able to walk around our streets freely and not worry if we're going to be killed. That's the only way that things are going to change. Is if the the public decides that they don't want to live in fear," Melissa Quass said.
Police described the shooter as a 5 feet 10 inches tall man, who is about 170 pounds. He wore a black and gray shirt, black pants and a black hat at the time of the shooting. Witnesses were unable to provide a description of the getaway driver.
"He did stand up for the ones he loved," Melissa Quass said. "Unfortunately the shooter did not respect him or his girlfriend. If I was there, I would have probably been the one that took the bullet."
Police said a motive for the shooting is unclear, and they believe it was a random act.
Quass' family said he was an organ donor and at least 100 people are expected to receive transplants beginning Tuesday morning.
