Family files suit against officers they say stunned son to death

Calvon Reid, 39, died of electrocution when Coconut Creek officers used Taser on him, medical examiner says

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – The parents of a man who died after being stunned with a Taser multiple times by Coconut Creek police officers filed a wrongful death suit Thursday against the city and four officers involved in the incident.

The suit alleges that the officers caused the death of Calvon Reid, 39, when they repeatedly stunned him in May after he refused medical treatment.

Then-Chief Michael Mann resigned after it was discovered that the officers involved, including Sgt. David Freeman, the senior officer on scene, didn't have up-to-date certification to even carry the Tasers.

All officers have been cleared of wrongdoing by the department and are back working on the streets.

The attorney representing the officers, Tony Alfero, told Local 10 News reporter Bob Norman that he believes other factors, including a heart condition and the fact that blood tests showed cocaine in Reid's bloodstream, may have been to blame for Reid's death.

The medical examiner ruled Reid's death a homicide by electrocution.

The State Attorney's Office has yet to decide whether charges should be filed in the case.
