Family of man killed on Florida's Turnpike ask public for help in finding hit-and-run driver

Luis Rodriguez, 26, fatally hit by car July 1

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ The family of a hit-and-run victim is asking for the public's help in finding the person who was driving the car that struck him early this month.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Luis Rodriguez, 26, was riding to work on his motorcycle July 1 when he was fatally struck by a car on Florida's Turnpike at Kendall Drive.

Family members remember him as a devoted father who raised his stepdaughter as his own.

"I just want answers so I can be able to tell my kids what happened to their dad," Rodriguez's fiancee, Mariana Cruz, said. "Because it's not fair to leave him. To have just left him there and not give the family that closure."

"Nothing is going to bring him back," Rodriguez's sister, Yessenia Barrios, said. "Nothing is going to replace him. Nobody is ever going to give me those memories I lost of my brother growing up. Nobody's going to bring that back. But having the peace of mind that I least I know what happened to him that morning is what matters to me."

Troopers said Rodriguez's motorcycle malfunctioned in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike, causing him to slide and fall into the roadway. Troopers said a car then hit him and left him on the highway to die.

FHP said it does not have a description of the vehicle that struck Rodriguez.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
