SOUTH MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. -

One man was killed in a wrong-way crash on U.S. 1 early Thursday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened near mile marker 126 about 3:40 a.m.

According to FHP, the driver of a Toyota Tundra was heading northbound in the southbound lanes when she hit a Buick LeSabre head-on. The driver of the LeSabre, 45-year-old Travis Carter, was killed.

"Speed kills. Speed kills out here," said FHP spokesman Joe Sanchez. "When you're traveling in the wrong direction of traffic and you collide into a vehicle head-on, well, chances are somebody is going to lose their lives, and in this accident, someone lost their life."

The wrong-way driver, a 53-year-old woman, was transported to Kendall Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, troopers said.

Charges are pending against her. Officials believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

The southbound lanes were closed for several hours while troopers investigated.
