Federal workers return from furlough

SOUTH FLORIDA – Thousands of federal employees who were furloughed during the government shutdown returned to work Thursday.

They included Gladys Hernandez, who works in the Department of Homeland Security.

"I thought I was going to get some more sleep but no -- but it was a very good call," she said. "They said back to work, business as usual, call your people. So I did and we all hurried, got out of bed."

Elsewhere, Dry Tortugas National Park reopened. Everglades National Park is expected to fully reopen by Friday morning.

"We're all happy we're open again, too, and so are the visitors," said Betty Mamuyac, who added that she spent time working on her house while she was furloughed from her job at Everglades National Park.
