Feds gave Miami-Dade police departments mine resistant vehicles

MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Miami-Dade County police departments have several 18 ton vehicles built to withstand improvised explosive devices.

The armor-plated mine resistant ambush protected vehicles were in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, where the Pentagon reportedly deployed about 12,000. 

According to records obtained by The Marshall Project Florida International University, Coral Gables Police Department and North Miami Beach Police each got a mine resistant vehicle worth $733,000. Miami Gardens Police Department and Hialeah police each got a $658,000 mine resistant vehicle.

The Department of Defense 1033 program has transferred $5 billion in excess equipment to about 7,500 agencies since 1990. It came under scrutiny after Washington Post and New York Times reports.
