Pompano Beach woman, 21, killed by wrong-way driver in Ormond Beach

Jennifer Otto pronounced dead at scene

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A 21-year-old woman from Pompano Beach was killed and another woman was seriously injured Sunday morning after they were hit by a wrong-way driver in Volusia County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said Alex Jamison, 28, of Simpsonville, South Carolina, was driving north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near mile marker 269 in Ormond Beach just before 2 a.m. when he struck a Toyota Prius head-on.

Jamison's truck flipped after the initial crash, but troopers said he was able to get out of it on his own. He was taken to Halifax Medical Center with minor injuries, troopers said.

The driver of the Prius, Maria Stengel, 29, of Boca Raton, was taken to Halifax Medical Center for her injuries, troopers said.

Her passenger, Jennifer Otto, was pronounced dead at the scene, the FHP said.

Otto was a nursing student at Broward College.

Her family said they are "devastated" about her death.

All southbound lanes of I-95 were closed at mile marker 273 and U.S. Highway 1 after the crash.

Troopers said charges against Jamison are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
