MIAMI – Little Havana continued to be a site of celebration Wednesday as Calle Ocho was closed to traffic for a rally after the death of Fidel Castro.
Parking meters were covered Wednesday morning as street vendors set up tents, grilled food and kept drinks cold.
Ricardo Delahoz said he is selling water and lemonade.
"We have a chant that we say, 'Lemonade, yes. Castro, no,'" he said.
The rally is being held at the Bay of Pigs memorial across the street from Delahoz's stand. It's there that Cuban exiles, political prisoners and the Ladies in White are calling for unity and demanding freedom.
Local 10 News reporter Andrew Perez was at the rally when the event kicked off at 5 p.m. and saw people waving banners that said, "Long live a free Cuba," as people danced in the street.
"I think it's going to be very big, because the Cuban people really see this as a renaissance for their country now that Fidel Castro has died," Delahoz said.
Casto's estranged sister, Juanita Castro, was not in attendance at Wednesday night's rally.
She told Local 10 News earlier this week that she mourns her brother, despite not having spoken to him in decades.
"I can't celebrate the death of any human being. It doesn't matter," she said. "Any person that dies, it's sad."
Southwest Eighth Street is closed to traffic from 12th Avenue to 17th Avenue for the event.
