POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A fight between two parents led to a teenager being stabbed on a school bus Thursday morning, a Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said.
BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter said the fight started on a Broward County school bus near Northwest 27th Avenue and Northwest Fifth Street about 8:40 a.m.
"What started out as a mother trying to protect her son, who was being bullied, turned violent," Carter said.
The mother, later identified as Chaquinne Demps, got on the bus to confront the bullies, and another parent and a 15-year-old girl followed her onto the bus to intervene, Carter said.
A brawl started and the girl "ended up being stabbed in the hand during this argument," Carter said. The girl was taken to Broward Health North to be treated for her injury.
"This could have been much, much worse," Carter said.
The mother of the bullied child went to her car and pulled out a gun, children on the bus told deputies.
"A stray bullet doesn't know anyone," Shontela Young, the mother of a student on the bus, told Local 10 News.
Deputies arrived and arrested Demps on charges of aggravated battery and felony possession of a firearm.
Carter said Demps has been arrested several times since 2004 on charges including grand theft, burglary, criminal mischief and possession of a controlled substance.
No other children on the bus were injured.
The students were headed to Pompano Beach Middle School. Another bus arrived to take them to school.
"The safety of our students is always our highest priority," Broward County Public Schools spokeswoman Cathleen Brennan said in a statement. "Following this morning's incident, all of the students aboard the bus were brought to school where counseling support services were made available. School and district staff members are also working closely with local law enforcement and (the) Broward district schools police department regarding their investigation into the situation."
