Fire reported inside Barry University dorm room

No injuries reported

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Miami-Dade firefighters were called to a building at Barry University's Miami Shores campus after reports of smoke at Browne Hall.

Sky 10 was over the scene at 11300 NE Second Ave. about 9:45 a.m. as at least four fire rescue trucks were parked in front of the residence hall.

Crime scene tape was also put up around the area.

A group of firefighters was seen entering the dorm room, whose windows were blown out.

"They were trying to knock on doors, telling everyone to get out," said pre-law student Yohance Huggins, who shot cellphone video of the fire. "The room was on fire; there was a heavy blaze inside (and) smoke coming out."

A small group of students was standing outside the building.

Police said no one inside the second-floor dorm room at the time.

"We are thankful it didn't get up to the roof area and start traveling. We were able to get to to it and do a fast attack," Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Al Darring said.

Barry University spokesman Jeff LaLiberte told Local 10 News that most of the students who live at Browne Hall were in class at the time of the fire.

No injuries were reported.

MDFR said the cause of the fire was due to an iron left unattended.
