FIU student injured in Miami hit-and-run

Police say Melita Jaric, 43, was hit while crossing the street to go to her car

MIAMI, Fla. – A student from FIU is in critical condition after she was hit by a driver Friday afternoon in Miami, police say.

The Miami Dade Police Department said the incident occurred around 4 p.m. Friday in the 4200 block of SW 11th Street.

Investigators say Melita Jaric, 43, was walking across the street to get to her car. Jaric's roommate said she was going to buy groceries.

Police said a car was driving westbound on the street and struck Jaric. The driver of the car then fled the area, continuing to travel westbound, without rendering aid, said police.

Authorities said Jaric was transported to the Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.

Officials said Jaric was placed on life support. Doctors had to remove part of her skull to relieve the swelling.

Officials reported earlier that Jaric was a student and employee at the University of Miami. However, Jaric's sister said she was working on a doctorate degree at Florida International University.

Jaric moved to Miami about four years ago to complete her studies, according to her sister.
