MIAMI - A Tampa Bay area middle school teacher is in federal custody because of allegations he attempted to use Facebook to get two teenagers in Belize to have sex with him.

Department of Homeland Security special agents arrested David Wendel Thompson, 48, on Friday. According to court documents, Thompson lives in Seffner and was flying from Tampa to Belize City. Belize refused him entry.

Homeland Security detained Thompson during a return layover in Miami.

The complaint alleges Thompson used Facebook in February to "knowingly" set up sexual rendezvous with 13-year-old and 15-year-old girls in Belize.

Department spokesman Nestor Iglesias declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.

Thompson faces between 10 years and life in prison if convicted.
