NORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A three-year-old drowned in a pool in North Lauderdale on Saturday, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

Detectives said the child was taking a nap with his mother and grandmother when he woke up and asked to see his uncle in the next room. As it turned out, the uncle was asleep.

The child wandered around and found his way to the home's backyard.

Moments later, the family realized the child was missing. Soon after, they found the child's sandals floating in the pool. The uncle jumped in and found the child underwater. He rushed him to the hospital, but it was too late.

"This family is devastated. It's a very sad situation with a little three-year-old boy wandering into a backyard swimming pool," said BSO Dani Moschella.

The family's pastor, Carlos Narciss, said the woman who lost her son is pregnant. It is not yet clear how long the child was underwater.

Police are investigating the case as an accident.
