FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Broward County School District told parents a computer glitch led to delays getting bus route information out, but sources inside the department tell Local 10's Bob Norman it was a managerial problem.
Thousands of families in Broward County spent the weekend waiting in line after a glitch delayed letters detailing bus route information. But the problems still weren't completely fixed Monday as school started.
Chester Tindall, who was brought down from Chicago by Superintendent Robert Runcie to run the Broward School Board Transportation Department, offered no answers to Local 10's Bob Norman about the problems. But his critics, like transportation employee Mark Corwin, were more vocal.
"We still have drivers, experienced drivers, who still don't know where they are supposed to go. Where their stops are," said Corwin.
Sources inside the district blamed mismanagement for the bus route fiasco, reported Norman.
"It's a disgrace to the public, to the parents, and especially to our students," said Linda Lewis, a union representative from the Federation of Public Employees, which represents bus drivers in Broward. "We served this weekend approximately 4,500 parents to stand in line in the hot sun."
But the problems still weren't fixed Monday as some parents were still waiting to learn the bus routes. Local 10's Todd Tongen reported at noon that his sons were driven to school because the bus showed up late.
"I apologize to any parent out there that has not received their transportation information," said Runcie on Monday.
"What is the school district going to do about the management that's going on over there," said Jim Silvernale, a union representative.
Runcie told Norman he believes the transportation department is still more efficient than it was before he came and that the problems should be cleared up this week.
The Broward County School District has set up a hotline for parents still lacking bus information. If you need info, call 754-321-4480.
