Firefighters surprise homeless pregnant woman

Nicola Taylor was homeless after flames destroyed her apartment

LAUDERHILL, Fla. – Members of the Lauderhill Fire Department went above and beyond their call of duty on Wednesday.

Last week they were asking the community to help a pregnant woman who was homeless after a fire destroyed the apartment where she lived with three other relatives. They didn't have renter's insurance.

"I didn't know what I was going to do, or how I was going to replace the stuff I had," Nicola Taylor said.

The firefighters gathered thousands of dollars in money and gifts, and threw Taylor an unforgettable baby shower at the fire station. But that wasn't all.

"We were able to get you a lease for a new apartment," Capt. Gerry Gonzalez said. "We covered your deposit and a few months rent, so you guys can get back on your feet and give you some time to push forward and move forward with your situation."

Sheniqua Johnson, a Lauderhill Fire Inspector said Taylor is having a girl in three weeks.

"That's a lot of stress, so we just wanted to lift the burden off the mother and the family as a whole," Johnson said.

Taylor's dad, Glenton Daley, and other relatives were moved to tears.

"I really appreciate it, because all I had on my back was one shirt," Daley said.
