BSO: 1 killed in deputy-involved shooting

Scott Israel: Man walking along Dixie Highway with rifle pointed it at deputies

OAKLAND PARK, Fla.A man carrying a rifle was killed in a deputy-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened at 5201 N. Dixie Highway in Oakland Park about 4:50 p.m.

According to Broward Sheriff Scott Israel, deputies were called after someone saw the man walking along North Dixie Highway with the rifle. The man then entered an apartment complex.

When the first BSO units showed up and saw the armed man, back-up units were called.

After the second unit arrived, the sergeant and deputy approached the man and ordered him to drop the rifle, Israel said. As the man began to turn, he pointed the gun at the deputies. That's when the deputy shot the man. No other shots were fired, and no other injuries were reported.

The man was transported to the Broward Health Medical Center, where he died.

Video showed a rifle on the sidewalk (pictured, above right).

"After that, a whole bunch of police cars started coming over here and an ambulance," added Mike Entenza, who added that he saw the shooting victim was bleeding from his chest.

The deputy has been placed on administrative leave assignment, due to BSO police, and homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances around the shooting.
