DAVIE, Fla. - Davie police found the car and identified the driver they believe was behind the wheel in a fatal hit-and-run crash.
Monday morning, Rita Chiero, 86, was hit on Southwest 33rd Street in the Everglades Lakes mobile home community.
Chiero was taken to the hospital, where she died.
Police used surveillance video and security logs to find the driver.
"With the cooperation of the trailer park, we were able to go through the logbook of people who came and went that day and we were able to identify a vehicle that was in the neighborhood at the time of the crash that had come there to visit somebody," said Davie Police Captain Dale Engle. "We tracked that vehicle down and we located it. We made contact with the owner of the vehicle, who indicated that they had been, in fact, driving the car and had gone to the trailer park. There was some evidence that was visible to the officers on scene with the vehicle. They collected that evidence and we've secured the vehicle here at the police department."
On Wednesday, police said the driver was cooperating with investigators. The vehicle was being processed as evidence.
So far, no charges have been filed.
