DANIA BEACH, Fla. - Flight attendants working for Spirit Airlines picketed at four airports across the country, including Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
About a dozen flight attendants were picketing outside FLL on Monday morning. Flight attendants also picketed at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Atlantic City International Airport, and McCarran International Airport.
According to the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), flight attendants have authorized a strike by a 98.4 percent vote.
"We certainly don't want to go down that road. We want to certainly send a message to management saying we want a fair and equitable contract that represents what we do every day for this company to make it successful," said Jason Meyer with the Spirit Airlines Council.
AFA says it and the airline have been negotiating since 2007. Earlier this year, AFA asked the National Mediation Board to declare that negotiations are at an impasse and are currently waiting to be released into a 30-day cooling-off period.
Flight attendants also passed out fliers to passenger warning of the possible strike. An estimated 500,000 passengers will fly in and out of FLL during the Thanksgiving Holiday.
"Its frustrating enough just to think about how you're going to have to be dealing with a lot of people at the airport and then think about having issues with cancelled flights because a strike," said one Spirit passenger.
Spirit Airlines issued a statement, saying: "Our flight attendants do a great job every day for the company and our customers. We are committed to reaching a fair agreement that rewards our flight attendants for their contribution and supports the company's growth."
Airport contracted workers also demonstrated. The group wants airlines to increase their pay and improve their health benefits.
"These are workers who keep our airport safe and running and clean, but they also work in the shadows without any job security, without really a voice at all," said Eric Brakkem with Service Employees International Union (SEIU).union.
