Hollywood city attorney arrested on suspicion of DUI after driving car onto sidewalk

Jeff Sheffel taken to jail after car gets stuck on bridge sidewalk

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Hollywood city attorney Jeff Sheffel was arrested Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence after he drove his car onto a sidewalk.

Police were called to the Hollywood Boulevard bridge just before 6 p.m.

"I looked out my window and just saw a car driving up the walkway path," witness George Dekeles said.

Witnesses said the driver, later identified as Sheffel, drove his car over a cement curb and onto the sidewalk on the bridge, eventually coming to a stop after wedging the car between the barriers on either side.

A passerby took a photograph of what looks to be Sheffel trying to get out of the stuck car through the driver's side window.

Later, a Broward Sheriff's Office deputy began a field-sobriety test on Sheffel, having the city attorney attempt to walk in a straight line, balance on one leg and touch his fingers to his nose. Sheffel was then arrested, handcuffed and taken to jail.

"I was shocked that he's a city attorney in my city, but, you know, again, it could happen to anybody," Dekeles said.

Because the car was wedged on the sidewalk, a tow truck had to lift the car over the wall.
