Hollywood offers police academy course to residents

12-week course began Sept. 15

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Hollywood residents who want to learn more about the day-today operations of a police department can enroll in a 12-week citizen's academy with Hollywood police.

The course comes with a $40 price tag and includes lessons on  police procedures, responsibilities, guidelines, policies and laws.

Participants will also get the opportunity to participate in an interactive firearms simulator, go on a ride-along with an officer and watch demonstrations from various units, including the canine unit and crime scene investigation units.

"It's an excellent opportunity for residents and business owners to get a behind-the-scenes and real-life look into the Hollywood Police Department," Hollywood police spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said.

The department started the program in an effort to build and strengthen the police department's relationship with the community, promote an understanding of the department, and to enhance crime prevention and community outreach.

"Over the years, some of the participants have gone on to become officers and volunteers," Grossman said.

Sessions will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. every Thursday from Sept. 15 to Dec. 15 and citizens at the Hollywood Police Department, 3250 Hollywood Blvd.
