Hollywood residents 'flock' their friends for good cause

Hollywood Women's Club raises money by 'flocking' residents

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Gary Spadaccini laughed when he noticed his entire front lawn was covered with pink plastic flamingos on Monday.

The Hollywood Women's Club was behind the pink prank as part of its holiday fundraiser.

For a $25 donation, club members will "flock" anyone who lives in Hollywood or Dania Beach.

"We came up with an idea a few years ago to fundraise for our club," Patricia McGee, chair of the club's flocking committee, said. "Someone saw the flamingos on someone's lawn, and then we thought it would be a great idea to start flocking some lawns."

This is the third year the Hollywood Women's Club has done this.

Members usually flock the lawns in darkness while the homeowners are still asleep -- but it can be hard to hide the bright pink birds.

"We have been caught doing it; the reaction is, 'What are you doing?'  Then we tell them what it's all about," McGee said.

More than 300 homes have been flocked, and the proceeds from the flockings go to a number of charities. This year the money raised will go to purchasing toys for children and families who can't afford them.

"It's for a great cause, it's a really funny thing to do," Spadaccini said. "It's a good thing for the holidays. All around great to take advantage of the opportunity."

And yes, the Hollywood Women's Club also takes care of the de-flocking.
