DAVIE, Fla. – A Davie man is fighting for a nativity scene to be among the winter decorations at a Davie school.

Over the past three years, he has noticed the school has displayed various Christmas decorations, including Santa Claus and Frosty the Snowman, but no nativity scene.
Egues said this bothered him because among the decorations was a menorah. District officials said it was there because the school considered it a secular symbol to represent the Hanukkah season, the same way Santa represents Christmas.
The Greater Miami Jewish Federation said that while a menorah is sometimes displayed for that purpose, it is generally considered a Jewish religious symbol.
Instead of adding a nativity scene, school administrators decided to remove all decorations pertaining to Christmas or Hanukkah. The school now has what it calls "winter decorations," including snow flakes and gingerbread men.
Egues plans on continuing his fight for a nativity scene.
He is considering using his website, DavieNativityProject.com, to raise money to buy nativity sets for area schools. Egues launched the website four years ago to get a nativity scene at Davie Town Hall, which he accomplished.
The site will have phone numbers supports can call to help his cause, said Egues.
Egues said he's not alone in his concerns about a society that teaches children, "God is illegal," as he said his son put it.
"As an American, I know my rights, but as a Christian, I know my obligations," said Egues.
He is considering suing the Broward County Public Schools over the issue.
