HIALEAH, Fla - One man died and another was injured after two sports utility vehicles collided in Hialeah early Friday morning. The man injured was a police officer traveling in a marked Hialeah Police Department vehicle.
The on duty police officer was traveling east bound on West Eighth avenue when it collided with a silver Nissan Murano sports utility vehicle at the intersection of 49th Street in Hialeah.
After the impact, both cars spun out of control and were badly damaged. The Nissan came to a stop after crashing into a tree on the median. The police car came to a stop on the garden of the Ocean Bank, 790 W. 49th St.
"Both drivers were seriously injured and air lifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital," Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez said. "The driver of the Silver Nissan Murano, has expired at JMH. The officer is in serious, but stable condition at this time."
Police kept 49th Street from 10th to 6th Avenue closed for most of the morning. Rodriguez said the cause of the crash remained under investigation.
