Miami-Dade officer injured in accident thanks community

MIAMI – The Miami-Dade police officer seriously injured in a motorcycle accident last month released a video Friday thanking the public for its support.

Major Ricky Carter was riding his personal motorcycle on May 7 when he slid off Interstate 75 and struck a guardrail.

While both of his legs were amputated after the accident, Carter uses the video to say he's ready to get back to work.

"I'm doing well.  I'm doing my rehab... but I'll be back soon," said Carter.  "I'll be back better than ever, giving 110% to the community of Miami-Dade County and the Northside, the same way I was doing before."

Carter said he is touched by the outpouring of support he received following the accident, including a blood drive held during the early days of his hospitalization.

"I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the blood that you donated to me, for the cards, for the social media posts, for the prayer vigils." Carter says at the beginning of the video.

Carter added that he has been inspired by the community during his hospital stay and rehab.

"I love the way the community comes together, because as a police officer with the Miami-Dade Police Department we all love to come together for the community, so it's really good to see how the community comes together for us."
