FIU student killed while trying to cross Southwest Eighth Street near campus

FHP investigates crash that killed 18-year-old freshman Alexis Dale

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A Florida International University student was struck and killed Sunday while trying to cross Southwest Eighth Street near campus.

The crash happened near where FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg was welcoming new students at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus at 11200 SW Eighth St.

University administrators released a statement Sunday evening identifying the 18-year-old freshman as Alexis Dale.

Dale's friends were mourning her on social media. Dale's Facebook account said she was born in Denver and raised in San Diego. She was interested in information technology.

Sweetwater officials said shuttles are being offered to students to move safely between Sweetwater's student buildings and the FIU main campus.

The Florida Highway Patrol was investigating the crash.
