6 safely escape house fire in Big Pine Key

Fire reported shortly after 5:30 a.m. Friday

BIG PINE KEY, Fla. – Six people safely escaped from a burning house early Friday in Big Pine Key.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said the house at 219 W. Sandy Circle caught fire shortly after 5:30 a.m.

The wood-framed house took about 45 minutes to extinguish, Monroe County spokeswoman Cammy Clark said.

"Preliminary investigation does not indicate anything suspicious," Monroe County Fire Rescue Chief James Callahan said.

Witnesses told firefighters that the fire started in the back of the house, possibly in a garage or storage shed.

Six people who live on the property safely escaped, Deputy Chief Steve Hudson said.

A state fire marshal is investigating the cause.
