Pedestrian left in critical condition after hit-and-run

Pedestrian injured in crash north of Sample Road on Sawgrass Expressway

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – A hit-and-run crash on the Sawgrass Expressway about 12:40 p.m. Friday left a pedestrian in critical condition.

The crash happened north of Sample Road following an earlier crash. The expressway was shut down for several hours as the Florida Highway Patrol investigated.

"At some point, the driver of the blue vehicle exited his vehicle and attempted to cross the Sawgrass Expressway, but he walked into the path of a tractor trailer," said Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky. "It's an 18-wheeler tractor trailer and they have their side mirrors that are on the door and then a lot of the tractor trailers have a set of mirrors on the right-front fender lower down to see things down below and that's the mirror that's missing."

FHP identified the pedestrian Friday night as 34-year-old Matthew Scott Danchak of Tamarac, who was taken to Broward Health North by air rescue in critical condition.

Wysocky said the tractor trailer was white and was pulling a white box trailer.
