WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Officials say a flock of wild flamingos in South Florida is the largest in state history.

Frank Ridgley of Zoo Miami says numbers of wild flamingos in South Florida have typically been very small since the late 1800s. A flock of 147 flamingos on state land in western Palm Beach County took wildlife experts by surprise.

Ridgley says it's not known where the flock came from. Wild flamingos are known to reproduce in the Bahamas, Cuba, Mexico and Ecuador.

The zoo and the Tropical Audubon Society are working to attach tracking devices to the flamingos. The devices may eventually reveal the birds' migration patterns.
