U.S. 1 reopened after early-morning crash

Southbound lanes to Florida Keys were closed for 7 hours

SOUTH MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – An early-morning crash between two dump trucks and an 18-wheeler Monday morning forced the closures of the southbound lanes to the Keys.

Seven hours later, the road was reopened.

Florida Highway Patrol says the crash happened on US 1 at mile marker 120 in South Miami-Dade around 3:30 a.m. The site is about 10 miles south of Florida City, near the entrance to Card Sound Road.

Both dump trucks flipped over, blocking all traffic on the southbound lane.

At the scene, the cabin of each rig was smashed in, with parts of the engines ripped apart. When the trucks flipped, gravel spilled all over the roadway.

Deputies say two drivers were taken to the hospital with bumps and bruises.
