Florida's Turnpike reopens after crash

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Florida's Turnpike reopened Monday night at 8:55 p.m. after a deadly rush-hour wreck closed the lanes between Sample Road and the Sawgrass Expressway earlier in the evening.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, a man driving a pickup truck pulled over just north of Sample Road at about 5:40 p.m. to rescue a cat that was in the roadway.

A woman driving northbound in a beige Honda struck the man, according to investigators, and then crashed into his parked truck before hitting the guardrail, ejecting the man from the vehicle.

Both the man and the woman, who have not been identified, were transported to Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach.

The woman was pronounced dead at 6:03 p.m. The man was listed in very critical condition as of late Monday.

The cat died at the scene.
